Content-defined chunking breaks your files into variable-size blocks and only stores unique ones. If you have similar files across machines (like system files, dependencies, etc.), they're stored once. Most users see 60–80% storage savings compared to raw file sizes.
Can I back up all my machines?
Yes! All plans include unlimited machines. Install the agent on each machine, and they'll all back up to your account. Deduplication means similar content across machines doesn't count multiple times against your storage.
Is my data encrypted?
Absolutely. All data is encrypted client-side with AES-256-GCM before leaving your machine. Your encryption keys are derived from your account credentials and never sent to our servers. We literally cannot read your backups.
How do I restore?
You have two options: use the web dashboard to browse snapshots and download individual files, or use the CLI to restore entire snapshots directly to your machine. Both work with any snapshot in your retention window.
What is bare-metal recovery?
Bare-metal recovery lets you rebuild a completely dead machine from scratch. Run chr recovery-iso to build a bootable USB image (~234 MB). Boot any x86_64 machine from it and follow the guided TUI to restore your system — including disk partitioning, LUKS encryption, LVM, GRUB installation, and initramfs regeneration. Supports both BIOS and EFI.
What happens if I exceed my storage?
We'll send you a warning at 80% and 95% usage. If you hit 100%, new backups will fail but your existing snapshots are safe. You can free up space by deleting old snapshots or upgrade your plan.
